The History of Black Jack

In 1867, a petition signed by 1,425 people was filed with the St. Louis County Clerk to incorporate the 1,700-acre town as the City of Black Jack. The new city became a Third Class City on August 6, 1970. The first elected mayor was John McLaughlin, who was appointed by Fletcher. A second election was held in April of that year. This was the first time a grill was applied to a stamp.

A thriving community of farmers, Black Jacks served as rest stops and rest stations on the road to market. The outlying districts often had no roads, so they would sleep overnight at a Black-Jack. The next day, they continued their journey into the city. Eventually, the town gained celebrity status and became a rendezvous point and distance measurement. It is still sold in a small number of candy specialty shops today.
